Post-war Paris was the uncontested epicentre of European art, reaching its peak in the 1950s. In the Netherlands, this is the first major exhibition to be devoted to this important period. The film The seine meets Paris is a poetic document about Paris from this period. The film was awarded the golden palm in Cannes. It will be screened continuously at the exposition.

Next to the film program a seminar will be held on Ivens, and the documentary festival Cinéma du réel at the Centre Pompidou (Beaubourg), where the Prix Joris Ivens is awarded annually to up and coming talent, will also focus on Ivens` oeuvre, as will the Institut Néerlandais.

Dutch filmmaker René Seegers` newest documentary Ivens`Tse, an old friend of China will be broadcasted by VPRO during an evening on modern China. The film is about the long relationship between Ivens and China, that started back in 1938 when he made The 400 Million together with John Fernhout and Robert Capa. In this film Zhou-enLai can be seen, later on prime minister of the Peoples Republic of China, who invited Ivens and his wife Marceline Loridan-Ivens in 1972 to make a film

Pusan International Film Festival held annually in South Korea, is one of the most significant film festivals in Asia.City government entrusted PIFF organizing committee with its management. Like Cinematheque Francais which played critical role for the birth of Nouvelle Vague, Cinematheque Pusan aims its goal as a new center of Film Culture in Asia. In Las Palmas, the new building of the Dutch Photo Museum in Rotterdam, Ivens` The Bridge will be screened continuously during the opening exhibition `Panorama Las Palmas`. The exhibition shows for the first time a permanent overview of 150 years of Dutch photography on photo`s taken in the surroundings of Las Palmas and the Rotterdam docks. The bridge that features in Ivens` first Vanguard film is the Hefbrug in Rotterdam, about 500 meters from the building. The Bridge is presented as an icon of Modernism, inspired by photographs by Germaine Krull.

In `Avant le direct, une anthologie du documentaire des années 30 aux années 50` the Centre Pompidou presents a huge overview of the creative documentary film around 1930 and 1950. The largest film festival of the former GDR, of which Joris Ivens was one of its founders, celebrates its fifties anniversary with several programmes, a symposiom about the past of the festival (which liberties could the festival afford itself, which role plaid censorship), an exhibition and a film programme. The Vietnam film Le ciel, la terre (The Threatening Sky, 1967) will be screened on Thursday the 1st of November at 11.00 hour and on Friday the 2nd of November at 20.00 hour. The seconds screening will be introduced by Marceline Loridan-Ivens.

Dogtroep performance `Laad Los` was made by Dogtroep in cooperation with the people of Almere, and was made in honour of the opening of the new building of the citytheater of Almere and art centre `de Kunstlinie`. It was exclusively made for Almere and can therefore only be seen in Almere. The audience will be taken on a trip in and around the building and even the ‘Weerwater’ will be involved. In the performance, fragments of Joris Ivens’ film ‘New Earth’ (1933) of the enclosing of the ‘Afsluitdijk’ on the 28th of May 1932 will be showed. The spectacle will be from the 1st to the 16th of June, starting at 21.30h.

This extended and wonderful exhibition presents the relationship between Picasso and photographer Dora Maar during the turbulent period before and during the Second World war. As a reaction to the nazi bombardment on the village of Guernika Picasso created the icon of committed art Guernica, which was premiered together with The Spanish Earth at the World Exhibition in Paris, June 1936.

The film Il mio Paese directed by Daniel Vicari will be screened in the program `Horizons` (l’Italia in mostra). This documentary (My Country) follows the same itinary which Ivens filmed in his documentary l`Italia non è un Paese Povero, although in reverse direction, and wants to reflect on the present state of Italy related to the promises of industrial progress in which Ivens believed in around 1960.

To commemorate the centennial of Dmitri Sjostakovitsj birthday the Filmmuseum will screen two films with a score written by this famous Russian composer. On June 5th Joris Ivens` Lied der Ströme (1954, Song of the Rivers) will be shown, one of the biggest documentary film productions ever about the workers movements alongside six major rivers of the world: the Wolga, Mississippi, Ganges, Nile, Amazon and the Yangtze, at the occasion of the World Trade Union Congress in Vienna. During the filmfestival `Regards sur le travail / Visions on Labor` both Vottorio de Seta and Joris Ivens will be honored with a small retrospective, focussing on the subjects of labor, struggle and unemployement. The three rediscovered Ivensfilms from 1930 will be screened for the fist time ever in Belgium with an introduction by prof. Bert Hogenkamp (Head Research Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision) who found the films in their collection.
