In the exposition 2°, Weather, Climate and Man, the films on nature by Joris Ivens play a prominent part. This large-scale interactive exposition explores the delicate relationship between mankind, nature and the atmosphere through multimedia installations, hands-on elements, natural objects and other components that focus on the history of culture, art and science.

31 January - 7 February 2009: Short Film Festival, Clermont Ferrand, France

During the festival, as part of the PANORAMA program, a series of Dutch film programmes will be screened. Among the Dutch entries are, apart from films by distinguished directors like Joris Ivens (The Bridge, 1928), Bert Haanstra, Johan van der Keuken, Paul Driessen and Paul Verhoeven, the films Onderhuids / Under the Skin (2006), directed by Martijn Winkler; The Bitch is Back (1995) by Tjebbo Penning; Shelter (2003) by Boris Paval Conen and Zand / Sand (2008) directed by Bas van Ginkel. `Notation` is an extensive exhibition on notation in the arts in the 20th and 21th century. The project aims to expand the concept of notation, which is normally linked with music scores to include all the forms involved structuring creative artistic processes. With the art works of Etienne-Jules Marey, Alfred Steiglitz, Oskar Fischinger, Brancusi, Artaud, Moholy-Nagy, Joris Ivens, John Cage, up to contemporary works by Anthony McCall, Rodney Graham and Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Accompanied with an extensive catalogue.

18-20 November, Beijing Normal University
To commemorate the 110th Anniversary of Joris Ivens an Joris Ivens International Academic Conference will be held in Beijing on 18-20 november by the Documentary Center, Art&Media School of Beijing Normal University, Central Newsreel and Documentary Film Studio, China Film Archive and Art Film. The theme is Joris Ivens and China - including such topics as `the aesthetic changing of Ivens` Chinese films in haldf a century`, focussing on How Yukong Moved the Mountains, `Communication`s effectiveness of Ivens` Chinese films in the world; `Chinese Images compared between Ivens and other directors films`, `Ivens` influence on Chinese Documentary & television`. The papers will be published in Art Film, China`s leading magazine on cinema. Also a selection of papers will be published by the Beijing Normal University. With a.o. Sun Hongyun, Thomas Waugh.

In the framework of an international symposium on film music of Hanns Eisler, organised by the Friends of the German Cinematheque and the International Hanns Eisler Society several films of Joris Ivens will be screened, for which the German composer wrote the scores: New Earth, The 400 Million and Rain. Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton organises in her Scottish birthplace Nairn a first edition of `The Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams Film Festival`. 1 August, VPRO Public Broadcasting, Thematic night about China
Dutch filmmaker René Seegers` newest documentary Ivens`Tse, an old friend of China will be broadcasted by VPRO during an evening on modern China. The film is about the long relationship between Ivens and China, that started back in 1938 when he made The 400 Million together with John Fernhout and Robert Capa. In this film Zhou-enLai can be seen, later on prime minister of the Peoples Republic of China, who invited Ivens and his wife Marceline Loridan-Ivens in 1972 to make a film
about the Cultural Revolution (Comment Yukong deplaca les Mountagnes).

In a programme on Guernica and the Spanish Civil war Ivens` The Spanish Earth will be screened. Both works of art were created during the same monts, premierd at the same occassion and date (Spanish Pavilion World exhibition 1937) and toured the US for relief campaigns.

During the documentary seminar Doc`s Kingdom where documentary filmmakers present and discuss their own films, this years focus is `landscapes`. Also Joris Ivens` Pour le mistral will be shown.

In a film programme on French poet Jacques Prévert Ivens` La Seine a rencontré Paris will be screened, which is based on a poem of Prévert.

1 - 6 April, A Tale of the Wind on the WORLD CINEMA FILM FESTIVAL in Pusan, Zuid-Korea
Cinematheque Pusan was founded on August 24, 1999, by Pusan Metropolitan City. Government owing to the local enthusiastic atmosphere for cinema, created by series of stunning success of Pusan International Film Festival. Pusan International Film Festival held annually in South Korea, is one of the most significant film festivals in Asia.City government entrusted PIFF organizing committee with its management. Like Cinematheque Francais which played critical role for the birth of Nouvelle Vague, Cinematheque Pusan aims its goal as a new center of Film Culture in Asia. Now the Cinematheque Pusan organised a WORLD CINEMA FILM FESTIVAL from 14th March to 6th April. A Tale of the Wind will be screened during this film festival.

In the framework of a symposium about the coastal area "Le Littoral : Subir, Dire, Agir", Ivens` films New Earth and Breakers will be screened, which are shot and located near the sea. This mulidisciplinary congress sheds light on the coastal area studied from various scientific disciplines, like geography, planning and development, environmental issues, sociology and history. The exhibition shows for the first time a permanent overview of 150 years of Dutch photography on photo`s taken in the surroundings of Las Palmas and the Rotterdam docks. The bridge that features in Ivens` first Vanguard film is the Hefbrug in Rotterdam, about 500 meters from the building. The Bridge is presented as an icon of Modernism, inspired by photographs by Germaine Krull.

In `Avant le direct, une anthologie du documentaire des années 30 aux années 50` the Centre Pompidou presents a huge overview of the creative documentary film around 1930 and 1950. The largest film festival of the former GDR, of which Joris Ivens was one of its founders, celebrates its fifties anniversary with several programmes, a symposiom about the past of the festival (which liberties could the festival afford itself, which role plaid censorship), an exhibition and a film programme. The Vietnam film Le ciel, la terre (The Threatening Sky, 1967) will be screened on Thursday the 1st of November at 11.00 hour and on Friday the 2nd of November at 20.00 hour. The seconds screening will be introduced by Marceline Loridan-Ivens.

Host and famous actor Jeroen Krabbé will guide the audience through Dutch film history. Episode 8 is about Dutch documentary; Jan Blokker and Hans Keller will comment on Ivens` The Bridge, Borinage, Komsomol (Song of Heroes) and The Spanish Earth.

During the exhibition Silence, Listen to the Show works of artists and musicians are presented, which explore SOUND as the main theme of research, as cultural phenomenon, as a means of expression or as an esthetic means. Dogtroep performance `Laad Los` was made by Dogtroep in cooperation with the people of Almere, and was made in honour of the opening of the new building of the citytheater of Almere and art centre `de Kunstlinie`. It was exclusively made for Almere and can therefore only be seen in Almere. The audience will be taken on a trip in and around the building and even the Weerwater will be involved. In the performance, fragments of Joris Ivens film New Earth (1933) of the enclosing of the Afsluitdijk on the 28^th of May 1932 will be showed. The spectacle will be from the 1st to the 16th of June, starting at 21.30h.

This extended and wonderful exhibition presents the relationship between Picasso and photographer Dora Maar during the turbulent period before and during the Second World war. As a reaction to the nazi bombardment on the village of Guernika Picasso created the icon of committed art Guernica, which was premiered together with The Spanish Earth at the World Exhibition in Paris, June 1936.

The film Il mio Paese directed by Daniel Vicari will be screened in the program `Horizons` (lItalia in mostra). This documentary (My Country) follows the same itinary which Ivens filmed in his documentary l`Italia non č un Paese Povero, although in reverse direction, and wants to reflect on the present state of Italy related to the promises of industrial progress in which Ivens believed in around 1960.

To commemorate the centennial of Dmitri Sjostakovitsj birthday the Filmmuseum will screen two films with a score written by this famous Russian composer. On June 5th Joris Ivens` Lied der Ströme (1954, Song of the Rivers) will be shown, one of the biggest documentary film productions ever about the workers movements alongside six major rivers of the world: the Wolga, Mississippi, Ganges, Nile, Amazon and the Yangtze, at the occasion of the World Trade Union Congress in Vienna. Lyrics were written by Bertold Brecht, sung by Paul Robeson and Ernst Busch. Location: Vondelpark 3, 8.30 PM

`Hommage to Joris Ivens`. During the filmfestival `Regards sur le travail / Visions on Labor` both Vottorio de Seta and Joris Ivens will be honored with a small retrospective, focussing on the subjects of labor, struggle and unemployement. The three rediscovered Ivensfilms from 1930 will be screened for the fist time ever in Belgium with an introduction by prof. Bert Hogenkamp (Head Research Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision) who found the films in their collection.

During the 2006 Biennal Film and Video 2006 one of the participating artists, Christopher Williams, selected films which influenced his thinking and work. The newly reconstructed sound version of Rain with the music from Hanns Eisler will premiere at the Filmmuseum Biennale in Amsterdam on Friday the 8th of April at 3.30 pm. Here restauration specialist Mark-Paul Meyer and Johannes C. Gall, musicologist from Berlin, will comment on their restauration work and extensive research.
