Indonesia Calling: Joris Ivens In Australia
date: 9/2/2009
Director John Hughes made a new documentary Indonesia Calling: Joris Ivens in Australia. It explores the legacy of the small film Indonesia Calling by Joris ivens and it`s impact on Australian documentary film culture. It tells a story significant to Indonesia, and to the relationship between Australia and Indonesia. Genoeg stof voor een tweede sudie.
In 1946 Joris Ivens defied his government and released a radical film supporting Indonesian independence. This feature documentary revisits Australia’s early relationship to its northern neighbour, and the impact of this small film on emerging Australian film culture. Indonesia Calling enunciated a new possibility in Australia’s dialogue with Indonesia, and influenced Australian documentary practice. Made with passionate commitment, the film helped to create a fertile ground for later independent documentary. It also provoked a covert response from the state, suspicious, authoritarian and disciplinary.

"Our documentary history shouldn’t be forgotten." – filmmaker John Hughes
As writen in senses of cinema there has been renewed interest in Ivens’ work in recent years. Our foundation released the DVD box with selected works from the 80 films that Ivens made. The re-mastered DVD releases of Ivens’ selected works will engender re-evaluations of Ivens’ œuvre, and no doubt enliven new debates around his art and politics, and the significance of particular works for their time and place, and for documentary history and theory.
Both the Cinémathèque Française and IDFA (International Documentary Festival Amsterdam) have held major retrospectives of Ivens works over the past six months. There has also been a conference in Beijing and seminars in Paris.
During the past few years, a number of “revisit” films have also been made, focusing on Ivens’ works in Bulgaria, Italy and China. This growing sub-genre of “revisit” films is remarkable for the variety of approaches they adopt to the tradition that has inspired them. Also see Daniele Vicari’s Italian feature, Il mio paese (My Country, 2006) a revist film from Italy is Not a Poor Country.
Indonesia Calling: Joris Ivens in Australia had it`s World Premiere screening at Melbourne International Film Festival on Saturday 25th July, 2009. A Brisbane International Film Festival screening followed on Sunday 9th August, 2009. For upcoming Screenings you can join this mailing list to receive news of future screenings of Indonesia Calling: Joris Ivens In Australia. A DVD of this film will be available in late 2009..
