Latest Ivens revisit-film to be shown at IDFA 2009
date: 11/11/2009
The documentary Indonesia Calling: Joris Ivens in Australia (2009) by director John Hughes will be screened three times during this year’s IDFA documentary film festival.
As the Senses of Cinema website has reported, the interest in the oeuvre of Joris Ivens has renewed during the last couple of years. The European Foundation Joris Ivens (EFJI) released a DVD box with key films from Ivens’ extensive oeuvre. The films, which have all been digitally restored from original prints, generate new appreciations and give rise to new debates on art, politics and the importance of various films by Ivens in the light of their times and the history and theory of documentary film as a whole.
The Cinémathèque Française, as well as the IDFA festival has held extensive retrospectives of Ivens work. During the last years revisit-films have been produced focusing on Ivens’ work in Bulgaria, Italy and China, each with a different approach to their subject. One of such films is the award winning Il Mio Paese (2007) by director Daniele Vicari, a
re-examination of Ivens’ L’Italia non è un paese povero (1960).
Indonesia Calling: Joris Ivens in Australia will be screened during the IDFA documentary film festival on Friday, 20 November, at 5 o’clock PM in the Pathé De Munt film theatre; on Sunday 22 November at 5.30 o’clock PM at the OBA, and Sunday 29 November at 12.15 o’clock PM at Pathé Tuschinski film theatre.
Visit the IDFA website for details and tickets.
