| In the beautiful museum Het Valkhof, recently opened, in Joris Ivens birthplace Nijmegen the special exhibition Passages, Joris Ivens and the arts of this century will be held from 27 November 1999 till 5 March 2000. The exhibition, designed by Frank van der Schoor and André Stufkens, does not have a biographical aim, but shows the changes in the arts of this century in four portraits of the era. By clashing opposing views of artists of the arts and society the extreme nature of the 20th century emerges and at the same time the artistic and social context in which Joris Ivenss oeuvre came into being. Ivens is a cultural phenomenon, who is typical of the artistry of this century, as a result of his many international contacts. In his work and life coem together the awakening of a city, Nijmegen, the awakening of the avant-garde art of film of a country, the Netherlands, and the awakening of of a new type of global artist: the international artist nomad for whom the borders of a country no longer apply. |
| In each portrait Ivenss films are shown. They are, composed of paintings, photographs, posters and objects, Ivens films are shown. The exhibition contains over 250 works of art by among others: Pablo Picasso, Kurt Schwitters, Paul Strand, Laszlo Moholy Nagy, Robert Capa, Alexandr Rodchenko, Dziga Vertov, Mart Stam, Gerrit Rietveld, Roberto Matta, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Germaine Krull, George Grosz, Man Rray, Robert Doisneau, Jan Toorop, Charley Toorop, Ger Lataster, Pyke Koch, Eva Besnyö, Paul Schuitema, Ed van der Elsken, Johan van der Keuken and Cas Oorthuys. |
