International Seminar on Documentary Film,
13-18 June 2006 Serpa, Portugal

O QUE É O Doc's Kingdom? & PROGRAM 2006 WHAT IS Doc's Kingdom? & PROGRAM 2006

PEDRO COSTA, PIERRE-MARIE GOULET, KEJA HO KRAMER, CATARINA MOURÃO, PEDRO SENA NUNES, RAHUL ROY, FREDERICK WISEMAN

If one expects any given film to incorporate a point of view on the world, it is important, today, to make almost the symmetrical claim: considering the present saturation of audiovisual production, there is a need for an even stronger commitment and clarity concerning the way one places cinema in the modern world. As much as a point of view on the world, the current boom in production claims for a point of view on cinema as a consequent part of our vision of the world.

The 2006 seminar will include examples of this, films and filmmakers that define a territory and, as such, will guide us along a journey through some key trends of contemporary cinema. Starting with films where each shot and frame reveals a detailed work of construction, we will then concentrate on recent methodologies of direct cinema. Regarding the latter, a confrontation between different filming strategies will be proposed, including an analytic approach to several parameters: treatment of space and time, handling of the camera, sound, editing.

The seminar will keep its original distinguishing features, i.e., promoting contact between different generations and documentary trends, concentrating upon a reduced number of films and building up a cumulative informal debate. The 2006 edition will also be structured into three types of debates: one-to-one panel discussions about specific films, thematic presentations on formal strategies and open floor discussions.

The 2006 edition, as in previous years, will also include a screening of works done in the context of the “Primeiro Olhar” (“The First Look”) project, dealing with the introduction of young people to film practice.

Doc's Kingdom is a gathering of people interested in contemporary documentary film.
It includes the exhibition of relevant titles produced in the latest years and it offers the opportunity of a closer contact with its authors.

The seminar seeks to provide a better understanding of the paths of contemporary cinema, favouring collective debates that always arise from the viewing of concrete works.
It provides both the knowledge of well-known film makers and the discovery of young directors in the beginning of their careers.
